Environmental
Mark Hill is regulated by the Environment Agency as an Authorised Treatment Facility under the new European Union End of Life Vehicles Directive. This new EU law aims to reduce the pollution caused by scrap yards and car breakers, and to decrease the amount of waste generated in the disposal process by increasing material recycling. This new legislation is having a major impact on the scrap metal and car dismantling industry, as well as on the car manufacturers (who are responsible for the materials that go into cars when they are first manufactured!).
A major part of scrapping a vehicle is the removal of those materials that can cause major environmental pollution: batteries, lubricating and hydraulic oils (inc. engine oil, gearbox and diff oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid), fuels (petrol and diesel), coolant and air-conditioning gas. Many of these materials can cause serious harm to human health if not handled correctly, such as used engine oil causing cancer or in the case of air-conditioning gas destroying the ozone layer and causing global warming. These materials, plus tyres, now have to be carefully removed, stored and disposed of in line with the new guidelines.
In order to increase the level of scrap car recycling, Mark Hill Ltd, (as part of Charles Trent Ltd.) has joined forces with Car Take Back. Under this agreement, Mark Hill Ltd will be able to guarantee that it can recycle 85% of a car, compared to the industry norm of 75-80%.
